Although traveling for the holidays or on vacation may look little different this year compared to years prior, hitting the road with kids in general can present many challenges. As dads with daughters, we certainly understand parents’ pain points and frustration when packing the family car and getting on the road. With that said, check out our top tips for traveling with kids below for a smooth ride!
Our first piece of advice is for the adults traveling to set realistic expectations including timing, comfortability, and the chosen mode of transportation. Understanding what your family is capable of is crucial. Making sure your kids are comfortable during travel will save the entire family unwanted difficulties. If breaking the trip up into multiple days or taking a flight versus driving would help manage the trip’s enjoyment, we absolutely recommend doing so.
Prepare an Itinerary
Every road trip driver’s least favorite question is, “Are we there yet?” We recommend printing out an itinerary for each traveler to hang on to and reference throughout the trip. For younger ones, we usually include phrases such as, “We’ll be there in time it takes to watch Frozen and Frozen 2!” It not only set expectations of time, but creates an activity kids can look forward to.
Parents know that there’s nothing worse than having to lug around multiple pieces of luggage, toys, and car seats! Travel lightly with WhizRider’s portable car seat, which can fold down to the size of a medium cup of coffee. Easily store WhizRider in a backpack, purse, glove compartment, or luggage for seamless travel. Each WhizRider weighs less than one pound, while competitor’s seats can weigh up to thirty pounds. For families with a few kids, you can fit three WhizRiders across a row as well. This will certainly save time, effort, and aggravation because WhizRider goes where you go!
Entertainment is Everything
As mentioned, keeping kids occupied and in-the-know is key for any successful family trip. In the spirit of traveling light, we recommend limiting each kid to one toy or game that can keep them occupied for hours on end, such as an iPad or a Nintendo Switch. With endless gaming apps or movies to watch on streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+, kids will never run out of things to do! Don’t forget to pack headphones or ear buds for each child as well so they can stay connected, focus, and minimize any unwanted noise. If all else fails, prepare a few games the entire family can play on the road such “I Spy” or the license plate game.
Enjoy the Ride
As parents, it’s very easy for us to get caught up in the whirlwind of getting where we need to be and not enjoying the journey. Be sure to take time to relax, unwind, and enjoy the quality time with your kids! Be sure whenever you’re able to disconnect and be sure to make those memories that will last a lifetime.
